Well, I was looking at the Edirol (looks chintzy), but for 100 bucks more you can get a Marantz that has many more features and seems built like a tank. Anyone used one of these and any observations or caveats?

The Marantz stuff has been a workhorse of field journalism for years and that's what it's geared for. More spoken word, interview type stuff than music. Yes, their units tend to be built to take field abuse. Don't know anything about their digital stuff except that they're talking about long record times on a single flash card. I didn't look all that closely but I'm guessing you're talking MP3s, some sort of compression, or really short record times for uncompressed WAVs.
