Sonya Kitchell, The Slip On Mountain Stage
August 31, 2009 - Singer-songwriter Sonya Kitchell first appeared on Mountain Stage in 2005, when she was 17 and touring to promote her first record. That night, she shared the bill with Nickel Creek, Pink Martini and Rhett Miller. Now, three years later, Kitchell returns and tells the audience a story about her last visit to Mountain Stage, when she was just learning to drive and made the road trip from her home in Massachusetts to West Virginia on a learner's permit.
Kitchell is a touring artist seasoned beyond her years, having previously joined Herbie Hancock on a worldwide tour. For her appearance in Charleston, W.Va., she brought along some other music veterans: the Boston-based indie-rockers in The Slip, who appeared on Mountain Stage in 2006.
On her latest album, This Storm, Kitchell utilizes The Slip's atmospheric, progressive indie-rock as a bed for music that has become more sophisticated since she left her teen years. Kitchell's slinky voice often shares traits with PJ Harvey and Joni Mitchell, and she'll leap from a hushed, breathy tones into falsetto cries.
