amazing show. perfect blend of new and old Slip - maybe a retirement party of sorts for the older tunes. havent seen them around much these days.

Surprisingly the "letting out" of this show didn't even stir much banter on the fan site. I hope it didn't "destroy the memory" or some such crap.

for me it's quite the opposite of destroying the memory. i recently had a nice long drive so i popped Narrows new years in and relived the night. It reminded me of why I love the SLiP and that they should not be taken for granted.

Don't get me wrong, I love the newer Slip creations. Especially, suffocation keep, paper birds, broke the promised land, guant debutante, stealing bread from a crow, airplane/primitive, let there be horses, and the list goes on. I just miss the older tunes, and it be would nice if they put some back in rotation someday You know, surprise us!!


Lately, I really love listening to the Super Little show, I especially love the Devil's Harp and Monster, I think it would be cool if The Slip would do these tunes as well.

I do look forward to the west coast SMMD run, and am excited to be surprised by Mr. Davis.

Let's just see what the future holds, I know I'll love it no matter what it is.

I for one was pretty psyched, I remember people giving it a positive response as well...

I don't think SMMD will start jamming out at all, they vamp and let Brad take extended solos but they're a folk rolk band - not a psychedlic one. Remember they are NOT trying to be the Slip.

They do take it out there sometimes. Rubber Ball often has a pretty hefty jam and the 19th Nervous Breakdown from the Independent in December was over 20 minutes! I would certainly classify them as a psychedelic band though they certainly aren't as out there as The Slip, even recent stuff. I don't want them to become The Slip but I don't think it's written in stone anywhere that folk-rock can't jam!

They have so many good songs that they could do their Eisenhower 'hits' as well as their new stuff along with a sampling of their old material. My biggest complaint with late-era Slip shows was not the repetitiveness of the setlists but the shortness of the sets. I know they are not trying to be the Dead or Phish but a lot of other bands play more generous sets like My Morning Jacket, Wilco or even Radiohead, though to be fair their songs tend to be shorter.. The last SF Slip shows were great because they did 2 sets and also really varied the lists a lot. We got back to back Zeppelin covers and nice stuff like Cut From The Cloth and Chasing Rabbits as well as 2 Steel Drum Zion's!

MMJ might play for longer, but Wilco and Radiohead don't play for more than 2 hours (though apparently Wilco's been really rocking out longer ever since that residency in Chicago when they played their complete catalogue). The only Slip shows I've seen that were shorter than 2 hours were at festivals or at outdoor events at colleges. So I'll give them credit for that.

and, though I know this might come across as really "indie" and I'm definitely in the minority here, I'd rather see them play a really tight 2 hour, single set show than see them play a 3.5 hour, multi-set show with a lot of jams spiraling off into nowhere.

of course I'd have no complaints about a really tight, interesting 3.5 hour show though! that 2003 post-Christmas show at the Knitting Factory comes to mind--probably my favorite Slip recording. perfect blend of improvisational experimentalism and tight catchy structured songs, for me anyway. I even prefer that to the 2004 NYE show easily, but I was at neither so I guess I can't truly judge.

Haven't been around too much, but have been trying to keep up with the conversation...

just pulled up 12/31/04 for another listen. Holy smokes. Autobody Experience. Marc's playing is so relaxed so far (we're up to gecko now), just creating a deep pocket - and dancing around it.

I miss Slip shows too. Just a little over a month and I'll be in Quincy See you front and center....

I have friends who have been more and less excited about various slip sounds, but I've always been so thrilled with their next steps. Been seeing them live since 99 - which would mean at least 4-5 different 'sounds' or heavy-rotation groups of songs. Maybe it's my tastes in music changing with the bands changes in sounds - or it's probable that it's the fact that these musicians are just so engaging, honest, talented, and real that I'm happy to hear what they're offering - whatever that may be.

It used to be "beetle to the badlands" every show (I'd love another!), or 'Nellie Jean', or 'Fuji', or 'tinder box', 'dogs on bikes', 'lucky dragon', 'spice groove', and on and on. I've loved it all - but there has always been discussion of setlist repetition. For now, I'll listen to the different eras at my leisure - and look forward to hearing the next sound from the musicians who have undoubtedly kept my interest and excitement as strong as any.
