  • Wooden Wand and the Sky High Band - Second Attention

awesome. look them up if you haven't heard of Wooden Wand. folky. their bio on their website is hilarious.

Explosions In The Sky - All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone

instrumental rock of sorts. after a couple listens, i'm intrigued

The Good, The Bad and The Queen - self titled

guy from the gorillaz. also like this one on first impression.

Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator)

amazing. possibly my favorite female singer.

Iggy and the Stooges - Raw Power

Honestly, I had no idea about what Iggy Pop did. I just saw him randomly on tv and magazines and thought he was an old classic rock guy. this guy rocked though.

    James Brown - The Payback

This album is so good. Long funky songs with James Brown doing his thing on top of it. One long groove after another. My favorite song is the last one, Mind Power. 12 minutes long.

Kings of Leon - Because of the Times

This is pretty good, but I'm getting somewhat sick of this genre of music. But after listening to band after band that seemingly sound the same, these guys stick out.

Lionel Richie - The Definitive Collection

Obviously this guy is new to no one, but you can't go wrong with this cd. I was inspired to get this by MMJ's NYE cover of All Night Long.

Seu Jorge - The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions

fucking awesome. makes me mad i'm not that talented.

Sly and the Family Stone - Stand!

    hell yeah

Staple Singers - Let's Do It Again

earlier stuff of theres, i think. this is the group that sits in with the band during the weight on the last waltz. you can imagine how good it is, and i can't believe i just now got this.

    Trans Am - Sex Change

don't even know how to describe this music. electronic rock. post rock maybe. i don't even know what that is. anyway, it's good music to kick around town to.

TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain

music that grates on my ears. i have no ability to enjoy this.

I saw wooden wand opening for sonic youth last weekend, thought they were a bit crap. but then a folky duo opening for one of the loudest rockingest bands in the world probably wasn't the best situation anyway.

if you like explosions in the sky, get the new do make say think album. way, way better.

and tv on the radio is one of my favorites but hey to each his own. good call on the seu jorge too, portuguese music is awesome.

i really grew an appreciation for tvotr. its one of those things that you like it or you dont.
i also checked out explosions in the sky for the first time and love it. there is also a great album by mogwai as soundtrack for the movie "zidane" (yes the soccer player) sounds boring but i hear great reviews and the music is epic. you can check it out on myspace

ahhh...JB's 'The Payback' is such hard funk, blows my mind. The tune 'Take Some...Leave Some' has such a groove, great lyrics too.

if you guys are into the whole post-rock thing with explosions in the sky, mogwai etc., you might like The Album Leaf. pick up their album "In a Safe Place."

I'd really like to recommend a local band of ours here. They're called the Kamikaze Hearts. They've got a new disc titled "Oneida Road" and you can BUY it at http://www.kamikazehearts.com/2.html

There are also downloadable MP3s for taste testing purposes.

Enjoy!

the DMST album is strange. some parts are really cool, and theres some parts that sound like shit. it think the last song starts great with a little guitar medley and buildup but then it has a whole section where the distortion sounds awful. almost to the point where i would think its bad for the speakers. anyone else think so?

I love that shit. reminds me of Akron/family (although i'm pretty sure it is Akron/Family on vocals there). but even better is that other song on the new album that has vocals. i was worried that DMST adding vocals would be disasterous but it's ended up producing some of their best work yet. in fact I think the new one might be my new favorite Do Make album. i definitely think its better than everything else i've heard in the past year or two.

and i'm seeing them at the end of this month holy shit yes.
