Chrysanthemum vs. Something Learned

Post: # 23460Post harrymcq »

Hey guys what do you think the title of this great song is? I think Chrysanthemum is a better title, but listening to the earliest versions of this there really isn't the Chrysanthemum bit at the end.

A few years ago after one of our parties Brad and Nathan were sitting around afterwards during the campfire jam and I asked for this one. I tried both titles and Brad didn't seem to know what I was talking about at first until I sang a bit of it and he knew (and then he played it!)That led me to think though that it never really got an official title.

Thoughts?

I think Chrysanthemum was the one that stuck in Slipbase. I vaguely recall hearing a recording of an early version of the Chrysanthemum portion of the song without the 'Something Learned..' verses. It was probably coming out of an instrumental jam. Can't remember what show it was, I'd love to track it down.

I've always liked Chrysanthemum better as a title. Since the majority of song titles come from either the chorus or the first lyrics in the song, I tend to appreciate the rare ones that are neither. Especially the lyrically strong songs whose title is no where in them, like Sometimes True to Nothing, or Tinderbox. But that's just me.

Funny...I had the same experience with Brad trying to figure out the name of a song from HSMF '09. Being a little flustered about being in a conversation with him on the subject, I couldn't even remember how the song started. He started throwing out suggestions..."Airplane/Primitive?" "No, I know the name of that one." Eventually I pulled up the first line...There's a lie..."Oh. Yeah, I guess you can just call it that." He agreed that it was the best song of the show.
Back to the original question...definitely Chrysanthemum. Or you can try asking Fred what he called it when he requested it on 12/30. Apparently Brad knew what he meant!

Yes they went back and forth between "There's a Lie" and "Stealing Bread From a Crow" on that one...

I was listening to the 12/30 recording and Brad calls it as "Something Learned" though I am still partial to Chrysanthemum :)

I like Something Learned fo show
Thrice you have rescued me from falling grace;
once when I was a beggar and you were the rain on my face,
once when I was crippled and you carried me,
and once when the blindness of others taught me how to see.

Well... it is Something Learned, at least according to ASCAP: (#159)

ASCAP listing of Brad Barr (or Bradford Philip Barr!) Songs

Also if these titles are to be taken as authoritative then it is Dear Milena - #35 (not Melina) and it is Miss Prism -#112, not Thunder Rose. And Mary, Mary Shelly (not Marry Mary Shelly).... very interesting. Though did they really write Dead Flowers?!?

Interesting find! Although you never know who actually submitted the paperwork, so it's still a little subjective.

Tons of mistakes also get through when the paperwork on music is filed. Hilarious example: my husband's last album is listed with a parental advisory for "explicit content" on all digital downloads, even though it's 95% instrumental. (The only words are a sample from a public domain MLK speech, on one song.) Someone at the label checked off the wrong box when submitting it for digital distribution. We noticed it right away and asked them about it, but it still hasn't been fixed on Amazon or iTunes.

Also on that list is "Slow That Boat" (a.k.a. "Messed Up World") as well as "More About Me" - same song, right? Also doesn't he sing Slow This Boat most of the time anyway?
