funny all the people taking photos with cell phones, and hey... there's a video camera! who's got the video!

That camera was brand new and was also stolen by the end of the night. Bastards.

SMMD Phrazz Pix on TheSlip.com maing page (finally!)

Post: # 19429Post Phrazz »

After all these years, one of my photos made it all the way to the "front page" of TheSlip.com. The photo:

...bears a striking resemblance to this one:

They filtered it with sepia tone (looks cool, alas, no attribution...).

I should start watermarking my photos, but that's a lot of work (especially with the thousands online). Taking them all down is kind of dramatic...it won't prevent snarfing...even watermarks can be airbrushed. There is no money in live music photography...too much competition. Taking pictures for my friends makes me happy, and I'm grateful to everyone who takes the time to thank me.

there are ways to streamline the watermarking process, but yeah. i hear ya.

My fifteen minutes of fame was short-lived. :)

Glad you liked the shot...of course it takes dozens to get one gem. Jon Bahr even got into that one (in the back, with his camera), as well as Heather and Brooke (in their zone "backstage").

Looks like someone still reads this board because they pulled the photo (instead of adding "photo by Phrazz" at the bottom). Oh well.

We all should give credit where credit is due -- in all things. I make it a point if someone thanks me for someone else's work that I explain "I didn't do anything, you should thank them instead" and I feel this is an important aspect of communication (and socialization). I've steered enough people in the direction of supporting all kinds of music, as well as helping other photographers. What goes around comes around.

In the realm of MySpace, there is a "casual disregard" for photo credits, which is understandable in that type of environment. But an "official" band site is different. My friends give me credit for my photos they use (even on MySpace). And I greatly appreciate that effort -- however trivial it may seem.

It's a sign of popularity to get photos lifted. Even Rolling Stone borrowed one of my photos (from Wikipedia no less, a Duo shot, which was also doctored :) )...but they surely gave me credit (which is very easy to do, so I don't feel as bad when someone uses the photo for free).

In the grand scheme of things, this issue is definitely not important. It is only important to me (and other photographers). This brings me to the next question: "Is photography a valuable addition to the music world?" While you ponder that, think of what "value" means to you personally, versus what "value" is as a general concept.
