Berkfest 1999/2000

Post: # 18433Post dcbinaurals »

Hi everybody, I believe this is my first post proper, and it relates to one of my fondest memories- the Slip's sets from Berkfest 1999. In particular, the set that occurred in the ski lodge late at night after Jiggle the Handle, I believe on 08/14- some of you know this show I'm sure, with Dr. Didg supplying hypnotics and Marco playing keys, and WITHOUT Marc who I later heard was ill that evening.

This set was my first slip (show). And I have held it dear to my heart ever since. My memories of it show me a crazed mesh of trancy sounds and manic jazzy phrasings from the old archtop I came to love (and miss every now and then).
So enough fluff from my faulty brain, I am on a serious hunt now for the shows from that festival, especially the 'sweat lodge' set, that festival is immensely special to me with regards to the slip and music thereafter.

The problem is two-fold: on slipbase there are two sets listed, on from 08/13/99 and the other 08/15/99:
http://www.phrazz.com/slipbase/1999.html
-this page says Dr. Didg played on one song the night of the 13th.

However, on phishhook there is a third show: 08/14/99, in the lodge, with guest and without Marc!?!:
http://www2.phishhook.com/cgi-bin/searc ... ue&&page=1
-this page says 3 nights did in fact exist, with the guests and missing Marc happening on the 14th.

So I need help, ya'll, I'm really trying to figure this out and then do whatever I need to do to get recordings of up to all three days if possible. Can anyone shed light on this for me?

I was at there for the set on the 13th. It was an afternoon gig and my first Slipification. We were actually there to see longtime faves Los Lobos later that evening. Little did I know how my life would change that day...

Somewhere in the middle of the set, I walked over to the merch tent, pointed to the stage, and said' "I want more of THAT!" Went home that night with Gecko and the rest is history. Dr. Didg did indeed play on one song - Rhythm and Gold. Earlier in the set, Oteil played on Dogs on Bikes. The two tunes were separated by a healthy dose of Yellow Meds. Ahh.

Can't help you with any of the other dates, but if anybody does come up with a recording of my first show, I'd love to know about it.

That must've been great too.
All's I know is we came into the grounds late the second night, think it was raining too, and immediately saw the slip.
It was immense and worked so effing well with the wooden room!!!, with all the bass, PLUS, well something I'd never heard is really what I said to myself then, that's the truth.

...I hope to uncover those days, I didn't even see the first one but my memory is faded, you know, so it'll really be sweet, after all these years...

...posting is wierd,
be well,

Hey Dave,

I met Oteil in the tent, 1999 I believe was one of the "mudfest" Berkfests, which was on a farm in a location before they were at the Butternut Ski basin (2000 I think was the first year at the Ski area). Unfortunately, I didn't get my first digi until around Halloween 1999 (Miracle Orchestra I think was the first set I took with my first digi). I did have a film camera back then...but I forget if I got photos of the 1999 Berkfest. Doubtful with all the rain we got that weekend.

So the ski lodge and 3 Slip sets with Marco sitting in for Marc (on only the ski lodge set, I believe -- he was ok on the main stage and late-night) was Y2K (I remember, this was almost a month before LiveStock L2K).

I don't have many 1999 shows (checked my hard drive, will go through CDs). Did you try getting in touch with anyone on Phishhook?

My '99 Berkfest Slippage was definitely on a ski slope.

I went to Berkfest in 2000 and don't really remember much of anything. I have a vague memory of seeing ThaMuseMeant up in that room I think. Also remember dancing onstage for SCI. As always would love to hear the tapes if they are unearthed!

Phrazz,

Thank you for clearing that up! That picture is most certainly from the show I am looking for! And if it be 2000, then that's great! Does anyone have this show? As far as 1999 Berkfest is concerned, I would love to hear those shows too, but I guess I'm really looking for the 2000 Berkfest set with Dr. Didg if it can be unearthed.

Thanks again for the clarification, Phrazz! Hit me up about jamming soon- I'm game.

Be well,
david
