Breathtaking, December 27, 2003

The opening track, Catacea, is the most amazing composition I've ever heard. I have this album on a tape, and whenever the song comes on, I swear to god, I start crying. It's so beautiful. I can't breathe. It just totally encompasses my entire body and mind. For this reason, it has become my favorite song of all time, and is the reason this album deserves 5 stars.

As for the rest of the album, it's tremendously soothing, the guitar work is wicked awesome; they just need a different singer, or no singing at all. The instrumental tracks are far superior to the vocal ones. Great driving-at-night music.

The Slip rolls up dave mathews and smokes em, May 30, 2003

...the guitarist and drummer and respectively are brothers and have played together for their whole entire lives, and it shows on stage and on this album. Mark is an outstanding bassist who changes it up every time plays and will play three or 4 different types of bass depending on the song thats being played. Basically an outstanding band like nothing you have ever heard before, mixes jazz, funk, rock, and is just a groove.

The Slip is simply inspirational. There music is amazing, this cd is one ofthe best chill cds out there. if you want anice mellow groove jam cd, this is it. the mellow jazz instrumentals to the drumming on the paints can make this cd marvelous. the music make you wanna get up and move your feet. johnnys tune will have you dancin. if you can i reccomend from the gecko also, this is there first studio release. it is slightly better than "does". i love this cd and this band. simply inspirational!

Great Studio Effort From Tremendous Live Band, June 28, 2001

I would hope that most are paying no mind to those messages which acclaim DMB as the pinnacle of jamming. The Slip's album offers much more than any of DMB's recent releases. The jams are imaginative and creative, and not atypical of the style, grow on you with each listen. The vocals are, admitedly, hard to listen to at times. The album should not be judged on the vocals alone, however, as it is a showcase of true musicianship. I have seen The Slip live, and can truly say that they are one of the best live acts I have witnessed. I hesitate to give this album 5 stars, not only because it falls somewhat short of their live performances, but also because it impresses a little less than their debut album, From the Gecko. If you can get your hands on that, I would definitely recommend it. It is one of my favorite albums.

I attended a festival this past summer where The Slip was performing so I knew what I was getting when I bought Does last fall. Since then, it hasn't left my stereo. Although they shine in the studio, nothing compares to them live. As far as "jambands" and DVDauctioneer's ignorant comments go, I find the slip is more progressive jazz then jamband. They take on a more John Scofield feel then the likes of a true jamband such as Max Creek or Percy Hill. In my opinion, all jambands and jazz musicians "jam" because they produce music that is usually improvised and have a "groove-feel". Dave Matthews, on the other hand, plays songs for high school kids who where designer clothes and girls that are stupid, that occasionally go for more than six minutes. Dave Matthews definitely does not jam and should not be considered a jamband. Jambands and jazz bands offer a very intimate setting that cannot be compared to any large venue sold out by Mr. Matthews. The slip offers just that. Who wouldn't want to go to smoke filled bar and have a beer while listening to jazz rather than getting thrown up on a drunk girl behind you (it's happened twice to me at a dave matthews concert. i vowed never to attend another, and pretty soon his music bored me to tears) I think I've said enough and I know those that appreciate the vibe-filled jazz or jams of Medeski Martin and Wood, Bela Fleck, or String Cheese Incident, etc. will know what I'm talking about.

'Does', the sophmore effort from this trio of amazingly talented musicians displays their increasing range, ability and maturity. Brothers Andrew and Brad Barr alongside bassist Marc Friedman lay down an incredibly dense sound for a trio. Despite their young age and 'jamband' classification, this trio shows the groundwork by which a new hybrid of jazz is developing. The Slip is creating a new sound, based on their own uniqe experiences and interests -- both musical and personal. 'Does' offers us an opportunity to share in their views and rejoice in their music.

DVDAuctioner should stick to frat parties and keep his feeble and uneducated opinions to himself.

Warning! Not for DMB fans, November 10, 2000

For those of you who think that Dave Matthews is as good as it gets (previous reviewer), do not buy this album. For those of us who can appreciate "real" talent when we hear it, go nuts on this one. Comparing DMB to The Slip is like comparing the Beatles to Herbie Hancock (i.e. comparing apples and oranges). The Slip is not about the cheery songs that make High School girls go nuts. The one word that describes them best is "groove." Very much along the same lines as Medeski Martin and Wood. Wheather they are banging on paint cans or deep into a guitar driven jam, the groove is always there. In groove bands, the guitar isn't always a melodic instrument, it sometimes takes on a harmonic role, a rhythmic role, or even a percussive role. No doubt in my mind, the slip has got it together. Listen closely to one instrument at a time, and think about what he is doing, and you will be amazed. Wheather it be the irregular drum beat, to the funky bass line, to the masterful guitar work of Brad Barr. Buy this album if you like to be engrossed in good, original, music. If you still want to go to the packed arenas to see DMB, go ahead, I have no problem with that. Those of you, like me, who enjoy grooving, go to a Slip concert in a small venue were you can get right up there with three talented musicians. Just becuase they are labled a "jamband" does not mean that they are supposed to sound like The Dead or DMB.

Fantastic album, god-like live, September 23, 2000

This band is so amazing, i am truly happy that i discovered them. They are, as all the other reviews say, masters of their instruments. If you are at all interested in the wide range of places a guitar, bass and percussion set can take you, buy this album. And, if the band ever comes to your town, SEE THEM. I saw them live after having their album for a little over a week and they were so amazing; they were beautiful. These are men who know their instruments intimately. i can't say enough about their live show. but, i could only give this 4 stars becuase of the 4 songs on the album (out of 14) that contain lyrics. the lyrics are trite, silly and just dumb. The instrumentation on the songs is also at a lower level. But keep in mind, it's only on four songs! This album is definatly worth the horrid prices people are paying for cds these days. if nothing else, buy it for the Ghanian traditional piece they play on Paint Cans. definatly cool.

This is a wonderful album. This is a wonderful band. Categoriacally, they slip right between jazz, funk and trance. Most of the album consists of stellar instrumentals that are far and away masterly. I love them. Please buy this album just to hear "Tohu Bohu". I havent heard an instrumental that took me away like that since the first time I heard "You Enjoy Myself". I want to give it five stars but what keeps me is the goddamn few and far between songs with lyrics. These guys cannot write a serious song with words. They can't sing. I really hope they stop singing because they can play their instruments like gods. You can't say that one of them takes the center, they jam together. I'm gonna go see a live show...
