The Barr Brothers in portsmouth & providence

Post: # 25641Post booher »

Anyone going to these shows? I've considered hitting both NH shows and the providence one, although Bethlehem, NH is certainly a bit of a haul for me...

Anyway, these two particular shows, Lyle Brewer is the opener. Brad actually did a review of some of Lyle's stuff you can find on his website, and he's a really incredible guitar player. Not that I'm affiliated with him in any way at all, but I've seen several of his sets as he's played consistently at a Cambridge, MA spot called Atwood's (which is a fantastic spot near Lechmere Station). It's equally a great opportunity for him as, I think, it is for you to see a premier guitar player and songwriter at either one of these shows. Just wanted to share, as I think that both of these shows are going to be special in that regard.

If you're going to any, don't miss Lyle! And, of course, I'd love for the chance to say hello to any of the fellow forum members here :)

I am going to Providence on 5/5 as well as the following night in Woodstock. Looking forward to both a great deal!

Also glad to hear about Lyle.

The 5/5 Providence show is sold out and I am looking for one ticket for myself. Anyone have an extra?

No leads on that sorta thing, sorry!

As I said in the thread in the GenCon sub, say hi if you come out to Portsmouth!

Wow. If last night was any indication, tonight in Woodstock is sure to please.

The Columbus Theater is great, though the show was not in the theater's main hall. It was held upstairs in a smaller, very intimate space (roughly 210 seats) off the mezzanine (or was it off the balcony?). In any event, it was great. The mix was awesome.

There was an appropriately rambunctious rendition of 'Crash On The Levee (Down In The Flood)' with members of Low Anthem (a nice nod to where the BBs are headed this evening). Brad joked, "We've been practicing that one all day."

Brad purchased a Danelectro Shorthorn Standard (with the "batwing" headstock and single lipstick pickup) earlier in the day at Empire Guitars and played it often throughout the night. The green Starfire V didn't get much shine, but the Shorthorn sounded awesome.

*There was a happy birthday sing-a-long for Brad's 2 year-old son Eli. Balloons and all.

By the way, it would be remiss of me to not mention what a stellar opening set Lyle Brewer played.

Dude, Lyle is incredible. Always a pleasure watching and listening to him. I hadn't realized he was such a big fan of The Slip, but he mentioned in his set at Portsmouth he'd seen them some 25 times over the years.

3S Art Space was really, really cool. And Marco's going to be there towards the end of the month. I think it's a spot that Portsmouth really needs, which is great that it came to be. I didn't realize that the show at the Columbus wasn't going to be on the main stage. But neat that they did that stuff with The Low Anthem. Jocie, her boyfriend, and some others came out on stage at the Marco show at The Sinclair in Cambridge a few weeks ago, which was a total surprise.

Was kind of bummed to miss the Providence show, but I'm sure it was a blast.

Also, Lyle is releasing a record tonight at a place in Somerville....can't remember what they're calling it, but the space holds Stubblebine Lutherie and the now reopened Mass Ave Music (on Somerville Ave.), but the venue's name is different. He's got sets at 7 and 9, but I can't make them, unfortunately. Otherwise you can grab his stuff up on bandcamp or check out what's on Spotify.
