I have a tascam US-122 simple audio interface. I think it says it has a preamp in it, but others say not to add a preamp before it becuase it will ruin the interface. For a cheep way, do you guys use, tapers that is, use preamps for the mics, or are they built into the interfaces. and is a mic with omni figure 8 and cardiod better then just a cardiod mic one is gonna do aplications on stage?
i want to get into this at an amature level
so thanks i know ill get loads of answers

I assume you want to record Grimus?
Either! Interfaces that have preamps obviously can be used, if you have nice epreamps you can use those though. Both will "work".use preamps for the mics, or are they built into the interfaces
You can only use one pick up pattern at a time. Figure 8 is not as universal as Cardiod but it can have some great used itself. Having an option on a mic is usually a good thing. I only have on mic with multiple pickup patterns, a Neumann U87. I have maybe 25 mics in total. So a fixed pattern is okay too. I recomend learngin more about what pick up patterns do and how to utilize them.and is a mic with omni figure 8 and cardiod better then just a cardiod mic one is gonna do aplications on stage

You know that cardiod is only the way the mic reacts to sound right? If you go above its SPL (sound pressure level) handling sure. So will a dynamic. If it can handle 130 SPL and you go to 135 it may break up. Same would go for a dynamic though. So it really depends on the mic and it's specs... Something with a PAD engaged can handle more. Dynamic are common for live stuff because they typically handle higher SPL's but alot of condensors can handle high spl's too. I think Kimock uses a AKG 414 on his cabs and those are condensors with pads built in. I used one of Brad's cabinet for the Buttonwood recording I think. Too many variables to answer that with a cookie cutter... What condensor are you looking at. Some can handle it some can't depends on volume...will a cardiod condenser mic at close distance distort on an amp?
