jeff, theres some awesome shows on archive from these guys. i think the last two bonnaroo shows were amazing.

this show is a little loose and rockin. its good, but probably not one of their best.

For the semi-uninitiated how much variation and jamming distinguishes MMJ sets? Are the songs roughly the same lengths? Are the guitar solos notably different?

I guess my question is do I need to collect a lot of MMJ shows to get their whole thing (like the Slip or dare I say Phish/GD?) or will a few choice nugs suffice....

from what i've seen and heard, mmj doesnt jam, at least not in the improv sense. they do play some songs longer than the recorded versions, but live they're pretty much going to be the same during the tour. they do try to mix their set lists slightly. i would say that about 3-5 songs will be different, and if they play the same songs they dont play them in the same order as previous nights.

the only difference i have ever noticed was the order of the setlist. other than that, if you have one nice sounding live cd you will probably be hearing an almost exact replica live.
