Today's quiz: What is this chord called?

For now I will call it "Em?"

Em?

This tune made me wish I was at high sierra. Thanks for the recordings John. And thanks for the tunes Nathan.

Nathan Moore - High Sierra Heartbreak

D F#m Bm G A7

       D F#m Bm G
It's a heaven that doesn't stay open
       A7
it's a tug of war
         D F#m Bm
it's the hysterical beauty with me
G A7
i can't take

          G
it's like lovin'
          D
more than one woman
         E7 A7
it's the high sierra heartbreak

it's the smoke that hangs in the trees
we're falling under
the restless slumber that tickles and smiles you to wake

it's the music
it's the high sierra heartbreak

it's the fuzz on the beach
it's the word on the streets
it's the grizzly

it's the almighty
writhing (riding?) on earth for heaven's sake

it's the penguin
when you didn't expect to see a penguin

it's the high sierra heartbreak
it's the high sierra heartbreak
edit: look below. i think bear is right about the Bm and the E7 (but i kinda like that Em in the chorus {it breaks my heart more than the E7}, and the Em7add9 seems to work.) maybe i'm just stubborn. or stupid:^/

either way. hooray for music. thanks for the corrections bear!

This site says it's an Em9,
but I didn't check note for note:

http://chordfind.com/

This one says Em9, too:

ok cool. thanks phrazz. this is probably a discussion for a different topic at this point. but why does an Em9 chord have a D note in it? The F# is the 9th, right?

9 chords are dominant chords...like an E7 - they have the 1, 3, 7 and 9 in them. Although Dominant chords have a major 3rd, not a minor 3rd. An E9 is E G# D and F#. Since this is a minor 9 chord with a G natural (not G#) you don't get the tritone that creates the dominant sound so I would say this is a Em7add9 chord.
However on the video I don't really see Nathan playing this chord. and the Em in the chorus is an E7 i think, and I think he's doing a D > F#m/C# > Bm to get the descending bass line. don't have my guitar with me to figure it out as Nathan hides his fingers pretty well....hope this helps

or,
can just as easily be played
C walk to Am F G
Dm G on the heartbreak part

different key, obviously, but it suits me better...
