Anyone see Dr. Dog while they were in Boston?

Post: # 23687Post booher »

I saw them last night at the second Paradise show. It was really, really good. I wasn't big on Shame, Shame, but hearing them pull it off live made me reconsider the album. Wasn't particularly happy with "Jackie Wants a Black Eye" as the closer, but the opener, The Head and The Heart (I think was the band name...) came up on stage to sing along with them, as it was their last show as a band and they wanted to tour with Dr Dog. It was a cool experience for them and definitely ended things on a light, happy note.

Mid set Taxi asked if anyone in the crowd was familiar with their first record Easy Beat (I guess they don't consider Toothbrush their first), which I was happy to hear. They played the entire thing as a medley in about 15-20 minutes, and it was awesome. They started it off with Today in its entirety, which is my favorite Dog song. It was absolutely incredible and was so seamless and cohesive. The entire show was high energy, and the guys really, really do put on an amazing show. Only thing that would have made it better would have been hearing 'From' in the set list.

I'm really a stickler about seeing bands that play live shows that sound a lot like the recorded versions of their songs, which is why I think I've loved seeing the Slip, Barr Brothers and etc. The ability to take songs to new grounds is obviously intriguing. But these guys were able to change small things and bring new energy and life to those songs. They're really captivating and I found it impossible not to be smiling and singing along the entire show.

Speaking of Toothbrush, it's been out of stock on their website forever, and I was able to pick it up for $5 at the show 8)

Anyone else get the chance to see them Saturday or Sunday?

I didn't see any of the Boston shows but saw them last time they came to the Fillmore here in SF. I absolutely love their songs though sometimes I do wish they would be a bit more experimental on the stage. I know they aren't likely to do a 20 minute jam but I do wish they would stretch it out a bit. Though they improvise they seem to generally do it within album-length versions of the songs. It would have been cool to hear them do the Easy Beat medley as I feel they have been neglecting their older matieral in favor of tunes mostly from the last 2 albums. I have been really enjoying the 4 song EP (thanks for turning me on to that, Lumpy!) and hope they come back out West soon. They've been at High Sierra two years now and I would be happy if they made it a 3rd!

Are you talking about Takers and Leavers? I haven't seen an EP besides that one.

It's actually 2 singles, 4 songs total. One red vinyl and one blue. You can also listen to them on their FaceBook page or they have a new deluxe edition of Shame, Shame with them:

Take Me Into Down
Black Red
Nobody Knows Who You Are
The Sound
