Saw Ray LaMontagne last night at the Captiol Theatre. He started off with a solo acoustic set before performing his new album with members of My Morning Jacket. Half of the crowd was none stop talking in between songs and during a lot of his songs especially those closest to the bar. Thought it was really obnoxious and embarrassing to be part of the crowd.
A lot of his songs are soft where you almost need dead silence. I recall some live Slip shows where there is a ton of background noise, maybe just a product of a small bar venue.
This was really one of the first times being at a show (i've probably been to over 200 different live shows) where the audience would not shut up and didnt quiet down when the main act came on stage.
Ever see an artist where the audience was way too loud?

I can't say that I'm very surprised by a chatty inattentive audience. Ray Lamontagne has gotten quite successful and popular, which tends to attract a less refined crowd.
It really is too bad. I think this phenomenon may be related to why people often (secretly) wish that their favorites bands never make it big, because then they can no longer see them in small intimate venues where people are quiet and attentive. That is where those magical experiences happen. I don't go out to see music nearly as often as I used to. Maybe I've grown weary of the crowds. It takes a special event coming around for me to feel excited about a show like I used to get.
It's cool that Ray Lamontagne is playing with some of the My Morning Jacket guys. That sounds interesting. How was the show apart from the crowd? I haven't kept up with his music in recent years but I've always liked him.

Oh the show was fantastic, i really enjoy his stuff with My Morning jacket. It has kinda a trippy sound to it but it sounds fantastic and really works well with his voice. I really think he is an incredible musician.
To piggy back off your post, i think its also due in part to this generation being obsessed with social media that people are glued to their phones and care more about getting the perfect photo or snap chatting videos of the show instead of just appreciating the music.
