An iPod question for all you techies......

Post: # 8334Post headnugg »

actually 2 questions:

1. Let's say I add an MP3 to my library. If I then convert it to AAC am I losing quality on the already lossy MP3?

2. I have a few shows in FLAC format, how do/can I convert those to AAC?

1. if that is even possible I think the answer is yes. Unless your only changing the header information in the file you are compressing again. I'm nto sure you can even do that but if it lets you I assume it is compressing again. Not 100% on that one.

2. There are some converters that will go from almost any format to almost any other. Not normally free ones though. Soundconverter on macs does this. Your probably best off to just go FLAC> WAV> Itunes.

dB Poweramp Music Convert is one of the best free music converters.

When I get a new show, I burn to data disk the flac, and then convert to mp3 directly. I also have downloaded many other plugins for conversions. All are quick and all work great!

I like dbPowerAmp on the pc too, but the whole program isn't free anymore. There's a free component to it, but I think to go from flac directly to mp3 you need the 15 buck version or something.

My girlfriend got an ibook a few months back and I've been really liking it for audio things. I use xACT to convert flac or shn to aiff (wav in mac speak I think? Anyone know if they're essentially the same), and use a program called Itunes-LAME to convert from aiff to a lame mp3 (which to many, is a better sounding mp3). It's a really slick program that interfaces with itunes - I like it because i simply input all the info into iTunes when the files are aiff files, then convert them within itunes and tell iTunes-LAME to delete the input files after conversion. I've got archived flac and great sounding mp3s.

Anyone else use iTunes-LAME? I haven't quite figured out which presets to be using, but everything seems to be sounding nice.

if you're on a mac, and use iTunes, check this out http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13048

The "gumstick" iPods ain't so great, they have no display and few features.
The nanos have displays, but not much storage.
For a 20GB iPod you gotta shell out around 2 bills. Get a 4th generation.

I got mine for free too - and while it was a pain in the ass for a short period of time, I do kind of feel like I made "the man" work for me - even if I was only a pawn in the capitalist freight train

I think the 20 gigs are closer to $300 than $200.

Personally I would go all out and spend $400 on a 60 gig......

I looked into that free ipod shit, but it's a major hassle, and I think they only give you a mini but I could definitely be wrong about that.
