yea, i noticed that. i was trying to talk to my buddy about how it used to start out, at least i remember hearing it once. so i was trying to get an early version to compare to that

edit: that doesn't really help me out cause that just gives me the setlist, not if it was recorded.

dates are key to the highway

It helps to have the setlists 'cuz these give the dates and the dates give the filenames that are on Oz and SlipServer (and personal show lists). You can't have everything handed on a silver platter. :)

The other thing the setlists do (among other things) is they try to help identify what is the "early version". If you're looking for versions that start out different, you might need more than one for your research - or else, how can you compare?

Finally, by looking at the setlists (you did look didn't you?) we notice that one of the Even Rats shows was the Paradise 10/2/2004 (and we know that was recorded...you do have the Nemo show, don't you?). Is that the "early version" you are talking about?

Maybe getting the early version is as easy as buying a commercial Slip CD. I really like that show and highly recommend it (in spite of the fact it was mixed on the fly at the show, I think it came out great).

well i have 11/11/2004, which didn't have what i was looking for, but a different jam before the intro.. i know it first came out, at least from what i got from your site, around 9/04... when i saw them play a few dates during the fall tour of 04 i remember them having something different, and then they would kick it into how it goes now. i'm sure it was just a jam into it but i just want to try and find a version to see if what i remembered is correct. and i don't have the paradise show i guess i'll look into that and see what i come up with..

Best bet then.. would be to snag the version off of the 9-15 or 9-16-2004 Colorado shows.. not exactly the best quality shows out there.. but they are 2 of the earliest recordings of it.. Looks like 9-9 is the earliest and if you know somebody that has the 9-10 show from the double door, that would be a killer version (I'm sure.. and hook a brother up!)... but best bet hit up either of those colorado shows...

Hope this helps!

It'll be hard to compare the 9/15/04 even rats (the first song of set 2) since either they started right into the lyrics or the taper was late to start recording and cut off the intro. You could try 11/05/04 NYC, the song is called A Little More Jill sometimes. The 11/5 version is the first one I heard and I was blown away.

This is going to be kind of like a needle in a haystack, the song has been played 64 times that were listed on SlipBase. From 9/9/04to NYE 04/05 there were 38 shows and Even Rats was played 31 times (a solid percentage), either as Even Rats or A Little More Jill. In 05 it was played 31 times (out of 60 shows), all as Even Rats. Happy Hunting.
