i had heard good things about this group and read decent reviews so i decided to check them out last night...best decision i've made in a long time. these guys were incredible and seeing them for the first time was alot like seeing the slip for the first time, i went in with no preconceived notions or expectations and left blown away. trippy folk-rock that they just rocked out, much in the same vein as animal collective, easily the best "first time seeing a band" in years. the crowd was pretty nuts too, their fans are ga-ga over them, it looked like some people were having total religious experiences and their songs really encouraged people to clap, sing along, yell, chant etc. the owner of the bar ended up having to pull the plug and turn all the lights on cause these guys wouldn't stop playing. it was awesome.

Went to see Akron/Family in Sackville, New Brunswick last night with fairly high expectations based on the press they've been getting. I have no idea where to start, but everything that's been written about their live show is true. The stage was absolutely littered with props - tambourines, shakers, noisemakers, toys, stuffed animals, kazoos, xylophones, recorders and (literally) bells and whistles. One moment it's a psychedelic noise freak-out, the next it's an infectious clap-and-stomp along chant. A virtuosic guitar solo builds into a wall of feedback. From that wall of sound emerges 4 part Beach Boys harmonies. I have NEVER seen a show with so much audience participation. Never. The entire crowd couldn't help clapping and singing along at points. The drummer might as well have been Andrew Barr, he was that good. Underneath it all was a steady, polyrhythmic beat.
For anyone familiar with their split LP with Angels of Light, they opened the show with an a cappella vocal jam > Awaken > Moment. They ended up in the middle of the crowd with an acoustic guitar and a banjo for a bluegrass/gospel number (something along the lines of "Lord give me sweet peace") to close the show. They played for about 2 hours straight, and surprisingly remained seated for the majority of it (minus the big freak-out moments).
Needless to say, I was blown away. They were just ridiculous. I've never seen anything like this and likely never will again.

...and I'm eager to see their next show. Good thing I didn't go last Fri. 'cuz the Tequila fest I had at Oyamel was not condusive to driving my own car (lucky the hotel cabs are only two blocks away). Where are they this coming Friday? I'll stay sober until I get there.
they're playing at salisbury state down on the eastern sho. it takes about 2.5hrs to get there and i think it starts at 8 so you might want to skip out of work early. i'm trying to leave at about 4:30 to beat rush hour traffic. i'm gonna hopefully crash at my grandparents' place 20 minutes away in ocean city, i don't think they're gonna be down there that weekend. sucks my cousin no longer goes there or else we could stay at the sorority house
