Agreed. My only point in responding was to say (so maybe I should have just said it) "OK, but you'll avoid an awkward situation if you refrain from mentioning it to Marc."
There are always many influences for most musicians, even if they are unwilling to admit this.

In his book "Thinking in Jazz" Paul Berliner talks about the process whereby students of jazz develop their own voice:

Imitation > Assimilation > Innovation.

Once a musician has moved to the last stage, comparisons to artists they've assimilated is old news. Seems to me, they're often willing to talk about influences. They're just not so happy to hear, "you sound just like..."
I've listened to a lot of Jaco and Marc, and I only see some phrasing similarities at times, but not an overall holistic match.
Lots of times, people will hear a fretless Jazz bass and the "Jaco" lightbulb goes off. Especially if any harmonics are involved. I remember noticing more Jaco references from Marc in the past, but I'm talking about turn of the century stuff here, back when I first found BAM.

(Putty, I'm not "accusing" you of any of this. I'm just jammin' with Phrazz here.)
I can't say Marc is like any other single bassist...he is definitely his own kind of bird
One bassist I did compare Marc to was Harry Shearer in "A Mighty Wind." But that was purely a visual comparison. Seems like Harry stole Marc's look for that one.
BTW, Crosstown Traffic was a joke
I know it gets played a lot, but don't you think they'd kill Manic Depression?
Funny you mentioned Kimock -- I just saw him with Zero two nights ago. He ripped it!

Kimock is an absolute monster, but I enjoy him more with his own SKB more than Zero.
Welcome to the Machine would be pretty tricky w/o a synth...or it would sound a lot different. I also feel it's been overplayed, and Have a Cigar is more humorous (perhaps) where Welcome has a sombre aspect. I'd rather have a cigar than be part of a machine.
I agree that Cigar would be the better cover for BAM. I was just relating a coincidentally recent BAM/Floyd experience. They could take both those tunes and the AC/DC "Long Way..." and do a mini-rock opera about their recent whirlwind in the limelight.
King Crimson? Oh yeah, there's an amazing band you don't hear on the radio too often. They never got locked into any box, that's for sure. 21st Century Schizoid Man is a mind-bender (maybe one of their more popular tunes, though that's sort of an oxymoron with those cats).

I was never all that much into the art/prog version of Crimson. I'm more into the '80s math-rock roster (Fripp/Belew/Levin/Bruford.) Now you wanna talk about a bassist. When God puts together a band, the first call he makes is to T-Lev for the bass chair. Believe it.
And at that, I'll leave you with some happy poetry:

wow,
didn't mean to set off a debate over bass styles here,
my intention was that i'd *love* to see what marc would do with that material... no comparison intended.

hejira is indeed one of the best lyrical achievements of all time, methinks. one of my favorite albums of all time too. in picking "black crow" over "hejira" for this forum was more from thinking that "black crow" would be more impressive for brad to sing than hejira. but yeah, hejira would be stunning as well.

"have a cigar" would be freakin brilliant too.
fun to imagine these things, eh?
i say a broken social scene tune. all would be good.

first one that comes to mind is kc accidental

- They already do! Even Rats' intro and KC Accidentals intro share the same drumbeat. Brad has also stolen "Crushed the Kids...." and "This is the blood I want to shed...." from BSS tunes.

My pick is "Bring on the Night" by the Police.

as the rest of my post said....

its same beat as even rats. the second and slower beat andrew does also is like cause=time rhyhtm - he used to smack the rim of the old white kick but now hits the rim of a floor tom.

... and my pick is fire eye'd boy

more ac/dc but more importantly more rock from the who.

All the talk of Jaco made me think of John Entwistle and Keith Moon and how Ive always wanted to see the slip cover the who just because marc and andrew would probably make John and Keith proud. My first choice would be a rendition of "heaven and hell".

"Don't come around here no more" -Tom Petty

"I want Candy" -BOW Wow Wow

"Slit Skirts" -Pete Townsound

I had alot of other ideas that I posted once. Maybe I'll look back.

I know it's not a cover, but Invocation just popped into my head, and I wanted to share, but I dodn't want to look for the "Old tune you'd most like to hear" thread. It's not even a most-like-to-hear-them-play-now, more of a 'hey, whatever happened to that tune? I used to love that tune!"

out.

I totally agree, i'd much rather they relearn some of thier own songs. That being said I'd also like to see them play "Flight of the bumble bee" and the underground music from super mario

How 'bot covers (by any band) that have blown your mind?

The Miracle Orchastra - Imperial Death March from 6/12/04 (anyone got a copy?)

Derek Truck Band - Rastaman Chant - Soul Serenade
