A special Two-night double bill of Tulsa-based JFJO &
Boston's own Club d'Elf will take place on Friday and Saturday nights,
the 10th and 11th of July at Cambridge's hip Lizard Lounge. Mutually
compatible stylistically, the bands have developed a friendship borne
of past performances together in Boston, and have upped the ante for
this extended run. Former David Bowie guitarist and producer Reeves
Gabrels will make the trip up from his current home in Nashville to
play with D'Elf. JFJO just wrapped up a new EP entitled 'One Day in
Brooklyn' recorded at 58N6 in Brooklyn, NY in July. The EP is set to
be released on September 1st and marks the studio debut of the new
quartet lineup of founding member Brian Haas on piano, Josh Raymer on
drums, and new members Matt Hayes on acoustic bass and Chris Combs on
guitar. The EP will be the first release on JFJO's new record label
Kinnara Records.
The disc heralds a new sound for JFJO, described by Signal To Noise as
having "a breadth and vision nearly untouched in modern jazz except by
the likes of Wayne Shorter and Bill Frisell." With the addition of
Combs on lap steel and Hayes on acoustic bass, JFJO has perhaps
invented its own genre: red dirt jazz, equal parts earthy and nimble,
pastoral and sweeping, elegant and rollicking. The quartet taps into
their birthright, drawing upon "The Tulsa Sound" born of hometown
heroes like JJ Cale, Bob Wills, and Leon Russell. These roots grow up
into a jazz foundation that's built firmly upon the likes of Duke
Ellington and Thelonious Monk.
Purveyors of Moroccan-soaked dub-jazz and recipient of the Boston
Music Award in 2007 for Best Jazz Band and nominee in Best Jazz
category in the "FNX best Music Poll, Club d'Elf also has a new
release ready to drop in the Fall - a double-disc. The group formed in
1997, spearheaded and fronted by bassist/composer Mike Rivard and has
included guests over the years such as the late Mark Sandman
(Morphine), John Medeski & Billy Martin (MMW), DJ Logic, Hassan
Hakmoun, Marc Ribot, Skerik, and Marco Benevento (Benevento / Russo
Duo), with Jambands.com describing the situation thusly: "Club d'Elf
consists of Mike Rivard and any cohorts who decide to embark with him
into perilous sonic chimeras."
Special guest Reeves Gabrels is no stranger to the band, having
appeared on several releases by the group (recorded during his tenure
with David Bowie), including Club d'Elf's debut CD As Above: Live At
The Lizard Lounge (2000 Grapeshot Media), Athens, GA 3/28/02 (2004
Kufala Recordings), and 2006's Now I Understand (Accurate), which was
the band's first studio release. Gabrels' distinctive brand of rock
and avant guitar stylings is also featured on the follow-up to Now I
Understand, a double-disc due in Oct '09 that represents two very
different sides to the band's sound: post-Radiohead electronica &
acoustic Moroccan folk music, showcasing Rivard's commanding playing
of the Moroccan sintir, a 3 string bass lute used by the Gnawa people
of Morocco, a mystical Sufi brotherhood descended from sub-Saharan
slaves brought to Morocco over 500 years ago..
